Founded in 1973, the University of Minho
began its courses in 1975/1976. The University offices are
located in Braga, in the Largo do Paco, an 18th century
palace that used to be the archbishops' official residence.
Most teaching and research takes place at either Gualtar
campus in Braga or Azurem campus in Guimaraes. In the academic
year of 1999/2000, there were over 16 000 students and some
1 147 academic staff (412 of whom with PhD and 304 in the
process of preparing it).
Most technological courses are taught in
Guimaraes. Science, economics, education, management and arts
